Surya Bhedana (Right Nostril)
Surya Bhedana — solar-piercing breath. Right-nostril inhalation to kindle the Pingala current.
Purpose
Activates the solar current, lifts sluggishness, warms the body, and strengthens digestive fire. Classical texts name it as the remedy for prolonged Ida-dominance when the day's work asks for warmth and effort.
How to Practise
Sit upright. Close the left nostril with the ring finger; inhale slowly and fully through the right nostril. Close the right with the thumb; exhale through the left. That is one round. Inhale is always right, exhale is always left. Begin with five rounds; build to ten over weeks.
A Modern Note
Surya Bhedana increases sympathetic arousal in the short term — this is the mechanism by which it lifts sluggishness. That same property is exactly why it is contraindicated in conditions where sympathetic activation is risky. The technique is not a general tonic and should not be practised daily at length without guidance.
Classical & Lineage Context
Hatha Yoga Pradipika Chapter 2 names Surya Bhedana as one of the eight classical kumbhakas. It is prescribed for kapha-dominant mornings, cold climates, and the lethargy that follows excessive rest. Gorakshashatakam offers the same practice under closely related names. Later yoga-therapy lineages (Kaivalyadhama Lonavla, Bihar School) have refined the indication and contraindication profile — both schools teach Surya Bhedana only after students have established a steady Nadi Shodhana practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do Surya Bhedana every morning?+
Daily practice is possible in winter or when a seasonal kapha lethargy is present, but extended daily use year-round is not recommended. Let the body's need guide frequency — if nothing is sluggish, leave the practice alone.
Is Surya Bhedana a substitute for coffee?+
They share an activating effect but are not equivalent. Surya Bhedana builds warmth through the nadis without the stimulant load on the adrenals. It also carries real contraindications that coffee does not. Frame it as a tradition-grounded tool for specific states, not a habit drink.
What if I feel heated afterwards?+
Mild warmth is the point of the practice. Strong heat, flushing, palpitations, or headache is a signal to stop and rest — Surya Bhedana was too much for this moment. Balance the session with a few minutes of Nadi Shodhana or lying on the left side.
Can this replace medication for low energy?+
No. Persistent low energy is a clinical question with many possible causes — thyroid, iron status, sleep, mental health, chronic illness. Bring it to a qualified practitioner. Surya Bhedana may be a complementary practice if a clinician agrees it is safe for you.
