Chandra Bhedana (Left Nostril)
Chandra Bhedana — lunar-piercing breath. Left-nostril inhalation to soothe the Pingala current.
Purpose
Cools the body, calms a restless mind, soothes an overheated Pingala state, and prepares the system for rest. Traditionally prescribed for summer afternoons, acidity from heat, and the hour before sleep.
How to Practise
Sit upright. Close the right nostril with the thumb; inhale slowly and fully through the left nostril. Close the left with the ring finger; exhale through the right. That is one round. Inhale is always left, exhale is always right. Begin with five rounds; build to ten or fifteen.
A Modern Note
Chandra Bhedana tends to shift the autonomic state toward parasympathetic tone. The effect is cumulative over a session rather than immediate. It is one of several tradition-grounded tools for cooling the system; the others (Sheetali, Nadi Shodhana with extended exhale, left-side lying) are also safe options to rotate through.
Classical & Lineage Context
Chandra Bhedana is the paired counterpart of Surya Bhedana in Hatha Yoga Pradipika. Where Surya Bhedana kindles, Chandra Bhedana settles. In Ayurvedic yoga-therapy, it is the first-line pranayama for pitta excess. The Sivananda lineage teaches it extensively in summer and in tropical climates; the Bihar School teaches it as part of a paired morning-evening set (Surya at dawn, Chandra at dusk) for students in good health.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I do Chandra Bhedana to fall asleep?+
Yes — five to ten minutes of Chandra Bhedana before bed is a traditional sleep preparation. Combine with dim lights, cool room, no screens. If sleep problems persist despite such practices, that is a clinical matter to investigate.
Is it safer than Surya Bhedana?+
Both have specific contraindications. Chandra Bhedana carries fewer acute risks for most people but can over-cool someone already cold or low-energy. Choose based on state, not on a blanket safety ranking.
My right nostril is blocked. Should I still try?+
You will not be able to complete the practice correctly if the exhalation side is blocked. Clear the nose gently with Jala Neti (saline rinse) or wait until the nostril opens naturally. Do not force.
Can I do Chandra Bhedana during the day?+
Yes, when the body is overheated or the mind is racing. Short rounds (three to five minutes) during an overheated afternoon work well. Avoid in the early morning when you need to activate.
