Significance

The first day of the Malayalam month Medam — Kerala's sidereal New Year. The Vishukkani (a sacred arrangement of rice, flowers, fruits, gold, mirror, and Krishna idol) is set up the night before so the family's first sight on Vishu morning is auspicious. Elders give kaineetam (coins) to children and household help.
