📆Best Day and Time to Wear Each Gemstone: The Complete Vedic Calendar

Each Navaratna has its prescribed day, hora (planetary hour), and nakshatra for first wear. Plus the universal Pushya Nakshatra rule that overrides all others, and the days to absolutely avoid.

TL;DR

Each Navaratna has its prescribed day-of-week + planetary hora + auspicious nakshatra: Ruby Sunday (Surya hora, Pushya), Pearl Monday (Chandra hora, Shravana), Coral Tuesday (Mangal hora, Mrigashira), Emerald Wednesday (Budha hora), Yellow Sapphire Thursday (Guru hora), Diamond Friday (Shukra hora), Blue Sapphire Saturday twilight (Shani hora). Pushya Nakshatra is the universal exception — override day for any gemstone activation.

The universal override: Pushya Nakshatra

Pushya Nakshatra (every 27 days) is the single best day for ANY gemstone activation, regardless of the day-of-week. If Pushya falls on a day other than the stone's prescribed day, Pushya wins.

Calculating Your Local Hora

A "hora" is a 1-hour planetary window. The first hora of any day is ruled by that day's planet (Sunday's first hora = Sun). The 24 horas cycle through the 7 planets in a fixed sequence.

For practical purposes, the first hora of the day = sunrise to sunrise + 60 minutes. So wearing your stone within 1 hour after sunrise on its prescribed day automatically lands you in that planet's first hora.

  • Sunday sunrise = Surya hora
  • Monday sunrise = Chandra hora
  • Tuesday sunrise = Mangal hora
  • Wednesday sunrise = Budha hora
  • Thursday sunrise = Guru hora
  • Friday sunrise = Shukra hora
  • Saturday sunrise = Shani hora
ℹ️

Use a panchanga app (DrikPanchang, Hindu Calendar) to get exact sunrise time for your city. The 1-hour window after that is your default hora.

Days to Absolutely Avoid

  1. Amavasya (new moon) — energy is at its lowest; no new gemstone activation.
  2. Eclipse days — solar or lunar; the planetary fields are disturbed.
  3. Rahu Kaal — even on otherwise-good days, avoid the daily 90-min Rahu window. Calculate from any panchanga app.
  4. Krishna Paksha (waning moon, day 1-15 after full moon) — acceptable for repairs / removals; avoid for new activations.
  5. Friday after sunset — never wear a NEW stone for the first time on a Friday night (commercial superstition + classical concern overlap).

Re-energising vs First Wear

Subsequent re-energisation (annual or after a major event) follows looser rules:

  • Annual re-energisation: on the stone's day-of-week, doesn't need to be Pushya
  • After eclipse: wash + brief mantra recitation, any auspicious day
  • After loss of contact (taken off for surgery, sleep): brief touch + mantra before re-wearing, no formal ritual needed

Frequently Asked Questions

I missed the Pushya Nakshatra. Can I wait or use the regular day?+

Use the regular day of the week (Sunday for Ruby, Thursday for Pukhraj etc.). Your stone activates at slightly less power but is still effective. The next Pushya is only 27 days away — you can do a re-energisation then.

Does the time of day matter for re-energisation, or only first wear?+

Time matters most for first wear. Re-energisation can happen any time during the prescribed day, though sunrise + 1 hour remains the most powerful window.

Can I wear my stone on a non-prescribed day in an emergency?+

Yes — emergency situations override muhurta. Once stable, schedule a formal re-energisation on the next Pushya or prescribed day to "correct" the original installation.
