5. Magnifier inclusions — natural stones show tiny inclusions, growth lines, or mineral deposits. Lab-grown stones are too perfect — uniformly clear.
6. Lab certificate — GIA (Gemological Institute of America), IGI (International Gemological Institute), GRS (GemResearch Swiss) are the gold-standard labs. Demand the certificate matches the stone (microscopic markings).
7. Professional verification — a qualified gemologist with a refractometer can verify in 5 minutes. Cost: ₹500-2,000 for a verification report.

Synthetic-Stone Red Flags

• "Too perfect" appearance — flawless clarity in stones that naturally have inclusions
• Unrealistically low price — Burmese Ruby for ₹500/carat is impossible
• No certificate or vague certificate — "Certificate from local lab" without a recognized lab name
• Aggressive sales pressure — "Buy today, price doubles tomorrow"
• Refusal to provide return policy — legitimate dealers offer 7-15 day return on certified stones
• Heat-treatment without disclosure — common for sapphires; demand explicit treatment disclosure
