Overview
The Maha Mrityunjaya mantra — "Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushti-Vardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Mamritat" — is a verse from the Rig Veda (7.59.12) and Yajur Veda. It is considered the most powerful mantra in the Vedic corpus for health, longevity, and protection from untimely death. Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap is the formal practice of reciting this mantra 108 times (one mala) or 1,008 times (a complete sankalpa) — typically before a Shiva linga, with a small homa, and concluded with abhishek (water-pouring) on the linga.
Significance
The mantra invokes Shiva in his Tryambaka ("three-eyed") aspect — the form that conquers death. The verse pleads: "May we be liberated from death (mrityu) as the cucumber is liberated from its stem when ripe — into immortality." It is the most-prescribed mantra by Vedic astrologers for charts showing adverse Saturn-Rahu-Ketu periods, severe health afflictions, and deep psychological challenges. Many families recite the mantra daily as a protective practice; others commission a brahmin Maha Mrityunjaya Jaap during family illness.
Muhurta selection — Vedic timing rules
The Jaap is performed in the Brahma muhurta (4:30-6 AM) or pradosh kala (sunset to 1.5 hours after). Mondays and Saturdays are especially favoured. Mahashivaratri (the night of Shiva) is the most powerful annual occasion. During illness, daily Jaap until recovery is the classical prescription.
Frequently asked
How many times should the mantra be recited?⌄
108 (one mala) is the daily recitation count; 1,008 (one complete sankalpa) for serious health concerns; 100,000+ for extended sankalpas led by a brahmin. Even daily recitation of 11 or 21 times has classical sanction.
Can the Jaap be performed at home?⌄
Yes — a small Shiva linga or Shiva photo, a diya, and a clean seat are sufficient. The Jaap can be done silently (mental) or audibly. Counting is done with a rudraksha mala.
