Overview
Karnavedha — literally "ear-piercing" — is the samskara during which a child's ears are ritually pierced. Far from a cosmetic event, classical Ayurvedic and Vedic texts describe specific meridian points on the earlobe whose stimulation is believed to enhance hearing, intellect, and reproductive health. The piercing is done with a thin gold or silver needle in a single brisk motion, and the resulting hole is kept open with a small ring for a month while it heals.
Significance
Sushruta Samhita prescribes Karnavedha at specific points on the lobe believed to influence the ophthalmic and reproductive nervous systems via stimulation of subtle nadis. Modern reflexology corroborates the existence of mapped points on the earlobe corresponding to vision. Beyond the medical claim, ear-piercing creates an aesthetic and ritual marker — many traditions consider a person spiritually incomplete without pierced ears for the wearing of sacred earrings (kundalas, jhumkas).
Muhurta selection — Vedic timing rules
Karnavedha is auspicious in the 6th, 7th, or 8th month, or alternatively in the 3rd or 5th year. Pushya, Punarvasu, Hasta, Shravana, and Anuradha nakshatras are favoured; avoid Bharani, Krittika, Magha, and Mula. Wednesday (intellect) and Friday (Venus, beauty) preferred. Avoid Tuesday and Saturday. Eclipse periods, Pitru Paksha, and Chaturmas are universally avoided.

Is gold the only safe material for the first piercing?⌄
Pure (24K) gold is traditional and recommended for hypoallergenic reasons. Surgical stainless steel is the modern medical alternative and is also acceptable. Avoid silver for the first piercing.
Should we pierce only girls' ears, or boys too?⌄
Both, traditionally. Classical Karnavedha applied equally to all genders. Boys' ear-piercing remains common in South India, Maharashtra, Bengal, and traditional Brahmin lineages.
